'Unite Through Football' Returns with FA Coaching Sessions

The universal language of football will once again break down barriers.

The award-winning ‘Unite Through Football’ programme returned to Meadowbank today (25/2), offering vital support to asylum seekers through the power of sport.

Sponsored by SBHL, a leading provider of temporary accommodation for asylum seekers in the UK, this impactful initiative is once again using FA developed coaching sessions designed to foster personal development and community integration.

Led by The FA’s Coach Development Team, these sessions provide more than just football training. Under the expert guidance of Danny Fenner and Abdoullah Kheir, participants were learning essential life skills such as teamwork, communication, discipline, respect, and leadership—qualities that can help them succeed both on and off the pitch.

It is widely acknowledged that participation in team sports like football can have a positive impact on both physical and mental well-being. Through structured coaching, asylum seekers not only develop their technical abilities but also gain a sense of belonging and purpose in their new communities.

These coaching sessions are a key component of a wider initiative aimed at providing consistent support and opportunities for asylum seekers. In addition to structured training, the programme will feature monthly fixtures, offering participants regular chances to develop their skills in a competitive yet supportive environment. Furthermore, plans are in place to expand into new areas across the South of England, ensuring that even more asylum seekers can benefit from this transformative experience—helping them build confidence, forge meaningful connections, and take important steps toward integrating into their local communities.

“The numbers on the day was brilliant. 60+ participants playing football, it felt like a training camp for the world cup. Both Coach developers thoroughly enjoyed the smiles and engagement. We hop in the near future we can work with a number of these participants and other them coaching opportunities.” Daniel Fenner FA Coach Development Officer (D&I)

With football as a universal language, ‘Unite Through Football’ continues to break down barriers, offering hope, support, and opportunity to those who need it most.
