Spirit of Surrey Paul

Remarkable dedication recognised with Surrey FA Spirit of Surrey Award

A profile of January winner Paul Haynes.

Surrey FA is proud to announce Paul Haynes as the latest recipient of the Spirit of Surrey Award, recognising his outstanding resilience, dedication, and commitment to grassroots football.

Spirit of Surrey PaulPaul has managed Leatherhead’s U14 side since 2019, shaping young players both on and off the pitch. In 2023, he suffered the tragic loss of his 16-year-old son, Freddie, to an undiagnosed heart condition. Despite this unimaginable heartbreak, he continued coaching, providing stability and support to his team.

In early 2024, Paul faced another battle when he was diagnosed with cancer. Even while undergoing treatment, he remained devoted to his players, only stepping away when his illness left him too weak to stand. His absence coincided with the team’s toughest period, yet his return in November reignited their spirit, leading them to an unbeaten run ever since.

Paul’s unwavering commitment and resilience in the face of adversity embody the very essence of the Spirit of Surrey Award. His impact goes far beyond football, inspiring everyone around him.
