Mental Health Champions Supporting Our Refereeing Community
Refereeing is a demanding role that often brings unique pressures.
To support the mental well-being of referees across our community, we are proud to introduce the Mental Health Champions – a dedicated group of volunteers who provide a safe, empathetic, and non-judgmental space for match officials.
What is a Mental Health Champion?
Mental Health Champions are individuals from within the refereeing community who offer confidential support to their fellow referees. They are here to listen without judgment, helping match officials navigate any pressing worries or concerns. This service aims to foster a supportive environment where referees can openly explore their thoughts and feelings. While Champions are not professional mental health practitioners, they can connect referees to professional support if needed.
In Need of Immediate Support?
The Mental Health Champions are here to support you, but they are not a crisis service. If you require urgent assistance, please reach out to the following resources:
Samaritans: Call 116 123
Shout: Text 'SHOUT' to 85258
NHS: Dial 111 for non-emergencies or 999 for emergencies
These services provide round-the-clock support and are available to anyone experiencing a mental health crisis.
Support for Under-18 Referees
For those under the age of 18, help is available through Childline at 0800 1111. Please note, to ensure the highest safeguarding standards, FA Refereeing Mental Health Champions can only support referees aged 18 or over.
By providing accessible and compassionate support, the Mental Health Champions are here to make sure no referee faces their struggles alone. If you’re in need of a listening ear, don’t hesitate to reach out to one of our Champions today.
