Surrey FA Referee Awards 2024
On the 7th of March, the picturesque Harbour Hotel in Guildford was abuzz with excitement as over 100 referees gathered for the annual Surrey FA Referee awards. Sutton United Vice Chairman Adrian Barry played the role of the host, ensuring the smooth flow of the event. The stage was graced by Premier League Referee Tim Robinson and Assistant Referee Harry Lennard, who presented the prestigious awards to deserving recipients.
The evening was dedicated to honouring referees who have dedicated themselves to the craft for 15, 25, 35, 45, and an astounding 50 years. Brian Fish and John Martin received a thunderous round of applause for their remarkable 50-year milestone.
Premier League Referee Tim Robinson and Assistant Referee Harry Lennard shared valuable insights into the demanding world of top-tier officiating. They delved into the mindset required for success, emphasising the importance of setting goals and maintaining focus throughout the season. Robinson likened the season to a golf tournament, with different stages requiring different strategies – from "making the cut" early in the season to the final push in April and May.
The event culminated in a heartwarming moment as all adult County Cup match officials were invited on stage for a photo opportunity with Tim and Harry. The camaraderie among the referees was palpable, with many expressing their excitement for upcoming cup finals.
The evening concluded with a gracious acknowledgment from Ross Joyce, The Football Association's National Referee Manager, who extended gratitude to all referees for their invaluable contribution to grassroots football in Surrey.
