Surrey FA Launches HerTeam to Empower Women through Football

The innovative program is designed to provide a safe, inclusive, and welcoming environment for women from all walks of life

On Friday 13th December, Surrey FA proudly launched HerTeam at Woking Leisure Centre, a ground-breaking initiative aimed at encouraging women to participate in casual football sessions to boost their mental wellbeing.

This innovative program is designed to provide a safe, inclusive, and welcoming environment for women from all walks of life, with a particular focus on reaching women from minoritised ethnicities and backgrounds.

Led by Surrey FA’s Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Manager, Lead Hidden, HerTeam seeks to create a vibrant community where women can come together, build confidence, and prioritize their wellbeing. Through intentional outreach and thoughtful program delivery, Surrey FA aims to make football an accessible and enjoyable space for all women.

Reflecting on the launch, Lead Hidden shared: “One of the best parts of working in EDI is the bringing together of communities, to create something dynamic and intentional in support of those with little or no access. HerTeam is here as a hub for people who want to feel good, be part of a sisterhood, and have their wellbeing prioritised. Women should fundamentally feel safe, supported, and empowered when they participate in sport; if we can also use the opportunity to build confidence and wellbeing along the way, let’s do that too! I’m humbled and truly grateful for the allyship and enthusiasm I have borne witness to, in enabling this important provision to commence its journey.”

HerTeam’s first sessions are set to take place in January, providing an opportunity for women to experience the positive impact of casual football on their mental health and wellbeing. These sessions will further cement HerTeam’s mission to create a sustainable and inclusive community for women to thrive both on and off the pitch.
