Girls Flexi-League Launches
On Sunday 19th November, Surrey FA launched their first Girls Flexi-League, in partnership with Power Play.
The league is an extension of the highly successful Surrey FA Women’s Flexi-League, which provides monthly fixtures to nearly 40 women’s recreational teams.
Across the county the recreational game has continued to grow, especially through programmes such as ‘Squad Girls Football’ and we are seeing more girls play than ever before. However, statistically, there is a drop off in girls' participation between the ages of 12 and 16. This new Flexi-League aims to support and retain young women playing for longer and provides the opportunity for those who may not be able to commit to weekly fixtures or want to play competitively, whilst supporting clubs who are oversubscribed or struggling with low numbers.
The League comprises of round-robin style 7v7 fixtures and takes place monthly at Cobham FC.
For the 2023/24 season, the league is open to U12s and U13s, with the aim to introduce more age groups next season.
Emma Eaton, Football Development Officer (Women and Girls) said:
“Our aim is to expand the range of playing opportunities in Surrey, offering football to a wider group of players and growing participation across the board. Creating new ventures like the Flexi-League supports more girls taking part and feeling that they have a place where they belong.”
Chris Dickson, Senior League Manager at Power Play said:
"To create exhilarating, memorable sporting team occasions within our local Community. That's part of Powerplay's brand vision and we did just that by running our first ever youth football tournament alongside Surrey FA. Despite the weather, a number of Under 13 girls relished the opportunity under the floodlights at Cobham FC, some of them playing their first ever 7aside games!"
