Mentoring
Volunteers in COACHING play an integral part in supporting and developing COACHING PRACTICES across Surrey.
Surrey FA is dedicated to making sure that coaches are provided with complete support, whether that’s in the early stages of their journey or to support their ongoing development ambitions.
We offer a variety of opportunities for both experienced and new coaches to engage in, aimed at developing their own skills in the game.
Involvement in the Mentor Programme will provide coaches with access to a range of benefits including:
- Access to a FA Coach Mentor, supporting you with individual bespoke 1-1 support
- Face-to-face support on the ground within the environment where you coach
- Support towards completing your next FA core qualification (e.g. UEFA C Licence or UEFA B Licence)
- Bespoke coach development events for you to engage with including observations of match days and training sessions
- Opportunity to connect with other coaches locally across the county
Our FA Coach Mentors have the passion and dedication to help and support coaches. Our mentoring programme also aims to identify and support coaches who have future ambitions to become Coach Mentors and Community Champions. Developing and supporting more mentors across our affiliated club network is a key focus for us locally and we will work with you to help you achieve your goals.
To be eligible for a mentoring programme, you need to meet the following criteria;
- You’re coaching at a Surrey FA-affiliated club
- Completed the FA Level 1 in Coaching Football/Introduction in Coaching Football

Rachel Woodland, my mentee coaching at Fulham FC Women, has submitted her Powerhouse application and has booked onto her UEFA C Licence starting early 2025. Nicola Brown has a place on her UEFA B licence, also starting in early 2025. I will be proactively be supporting both Rachel and Nicola on their journeys and preparing them as best I can to be ready. I believe Rachel and Nicola are good examples of what the mentor programme was designed for, to support the journeys of intentional coaches.
I completed my UEFA C back in August! My involvement in the female mentor group has contributed towards my progress. I'm now doing my teaching degree and I’m also a teaching assistant at a local school, which I love! Last week the children played football in PE, so I jumped straight in!
The 23/24 season and the start of 24/25 saw 10 coaches working with me to develop their coaching styles and abilities through discussions, feedback along with planning and practical work at sessions and games. Each mentee received several visits across the period and will continue to receive support through the remainder of the 2024/2025 season. With CPD hours allocated through the support, it was great to see the development of these individuals on their commitment to improve and learn. Well done to all involved in this unique course for the sacrifices made to develop as coaches.
